“Opioid Crisis in Florida:
What Can Local Governments Do?”

ICMA Practice Areas: 2, 3, 14 and 18

Thursday, May 4, 2017 · 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm

Manatee County, within Florida’s Suncoast Region, is highlighted as Florida’s most affected county with respect to the per capita rate of opioid-related overdoses. Attributal effects of the opioid-overdose epidemic include consistent annual increases of opioid-related overdose deaths, child removals, the use of Florida’s Marchman Act, and repeat utilizers of emergency and acute care resources. Manatee County’s new Health Care Services Manager, Joshua T. Barnett, MHS, MA, CPRP, ICCDP-Diplomate, will speak to how the County Administration is addressing this multifactorial issue through the use of data-informed interventions, collaborative multi-disciplinary partnerships, evidence-based practice implementation, and listening to local and national conversations.

This webinar, from the perspective of county health management, will describe the etiology of opiate-use disorders and discuss: useful data resources and statistics; various data-analysis initiatives such as Florida’s Drug Epidemiologic Network; opioid-use disorder focused consortia; implications of the Marchman Act; and the value of stakeholder partnerships with treatment entities, law enforcement, research, and the recovery community. Included in this discussion will be gaps and limitations in addition to lessons learned. As a benefit of the webinar, Manatee County seeks to establish enhanced partnership and communication with other County’s significantly affected by this crisis to elicit health promotion strategies that effectively saves lives and prevents further incidence of opioid and other co-occurring substance use disorders.
