9:00 am: Homelessness: One of Florida's Fastest Growing Problems for Local Governments

October 30, 2015

Homelessness is a silent problem that is growing in Florida. Most local governments don't recognize this growing social issue within their communities until it becomes a "political issue." What do you do then? When do you do it? How? Are there best practice alternatives that consider overall demographics, political will and other variables?

This unique and informative program will focus on this topic. Seminole County's  Community Services Director Valmarie Turner will jointly address these questions with the city of Sanford's Senior Project Manager Andrew Thompson. Also participating in this discussion is the city of Sarasota's Special Chronic Homeless Initiative representative Doug Logan. Attendees will hear different perspectives on how to deal with this growing reality for local governments and they will be encouraged to share their experiences/solutions with all attendees. Don't miss this opportunity to attend or to send a representative from your agency, to learn/contribute more about/to this issue.

2:00 pm: The Evolving Cyber Threat to Local Governments - November Webinar

November 12, 2015

Few entities are entrusted with as much personal information as state and local governments. From citizens' birth certificates to their death records - and just about everything in between - governments are expected to keep personal information safe. Securing data continues to become more difficult as more services move online and hackers, looking to attack local governments, are becoming more sophisticated. This webinar is a chance to learn about the growing cyber threat to local governments; namely, what these hackers are looking for, as well as the considerations city and county leaders should be weighing as we become increasingly immersed in "smart government" and a wired world.

Mitch Herckis, Director of Business Development and Programs for State/Local Government and Education at FireEye.

9:00 am: Florida's Ethics Laws: Building a Culture of Compliance

November 13, 2015

In 2013, State Legislators mandated County Constitutional Officials receive four hours of training per year on Florida's ethics, public meetings, and public records laws. In 2014, State Legislators extended this annual mandate to include municipal elected officials. Often, the people most relied upon to assist these local elected officials in the day to day management of these laws are the appointed professionals (i.e. City and County Managers/Administrators and their appointed staff). This FCCMA session will provide a summary of these laws in accordance with the same training provided to elected officials around the state and include a description of the roles the Florida Commission on Ethics and the State Attorney's Office have in terms of seeking compliance. In addition, and equally important, this session will provide an interactive discussion on how to "build a culture of compliance" within each local government.
