How long have you been an FCCMA member and why did you join?
Since 12/20/23. I joined so that I could learn from the seasoned professionals in the organization and become better at my job. I want to be of service to the community and eventually assist new members to become better themselves.
Are you an ICMA member?
No.
Please describe your areas of formal/advanced education.
I have a Master of Public Administration degree from Barry University.
Why did you select a career in public service?
I have always felt a need to serve my community. I believe it’s because my father was a public servant, so I learned from him. I do get great joy from helping my fellow man.
Have you always been in the public sector, or have you had experience in the private sector?
Most of my career has been in the public sector, albeit in the area of Information Technology. I had a short stint in the healthcare industry.
Please tell us about your current position and give a brief job description.
I am the City Administrator for the City of Oak Hill, FL. It is a small city with about 2,200 residents and a staff of six. Besides overseeing all the staff, I am also the City Clerk. I prepare the agendas and attend all meetings. I enact policies created by the Commission, work with vendors, review contracts, get quotes, and do Accounts Payable. I also do all Human Resources functions. Being such a small staff, I am involved in almost everything.
Please describe your typical day.
My day consists of reading/responding to emails, responding to requests, preparing reports, researching issues, preparing reports, and meetings with vendors, staff, the public, and city or county officials.
What is your favorite part of the job?
Doing the research to see how I can find ways to improve the city, both physically and technologically.
What is your least favorite part of the job?
Since I have such a small staff (six), my least favorite part is the limited time I have to do the various jobs. Switching my focus from one thing to another can get overwhelming at times, but that’s where time management comes in. The satisfaction gained from successfully completing a task or project is worthwhile.
What is your most memorable experience on the job?
Bringing some technology to the City and finally getting the City set up to be able to take credit/debit cards and online payments; and secondly, getting the meetings live on YouTube.
What are your hobbies/interests?
3D printing and laser engraving.
If you could give one piece of advice to people interested in a career in public service, what would it be?
Make sure you have a mindset of service. People will be critical of you – don’t take it personally.
Who were your mentors and how have you passed this information down to other aspiring public administrators?
Howard Tipton (Longboat Key Town Manager) and Kim Johnson (former St. Lucie County Commissioner). I’ve passed it on just by being available to listen, talk, and share encouraging words.
What career would you pick if you were to pick another?
Pilot.
Do you have a story you can share about how being a member of FCCMA has helped you or impacted you in a positive way?
Going to the Conferences has been a great help. I have met many people who have been in this field for many years, and I learned a great deal from them. Sometimes just being able to talk to someone and get another perspective is very helpful.
