"Enhancing Education in Your Community: Using a Business Action Team"

Jim Ward Community Center, 301 NW 46 Ave., Plantation, FL

ICMA Practices 2, 8, 9, 10

Public education (K - 12) is one of the most important services provided at the local level; yet, since it is deemed a County School Board responsibility, many Florida city and county governments don't understand what they can do to positively impact this service. This session will provide an overview of how the public education systems impact our communities and their ability to attract quality businesses. It will explain why and how Businesses, Cities, Counties, and School Boards need to work together to advocate for public education and the benefits of the collaborative "Business Action Team" model. Panelists include representatives from the Broward County School System, the Broward Workshop, the Early Learning Coalition of Broward, and the Greater Ft. Lauderdale Alliance.

Speakers
Bob Swindell, President & CEO, Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance; Anthony Abbate, Associate Provost for Broward Campuses, FAU; Lucille Flynn, Curriculum Supervisor, Career, Technical, Adult and Community Education, Broward County Public Schools; Carol Lopez, Supervisor for College & Career Readiness, School Counseling & Brace Advisement; and James F. Griffin II, Principal, Lauderdale Lakes Middle School
