Housing Challenges and Solutions Post Hurricane
July 11, 2019 from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m.
ICMA Practice Areas: 2, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10

Program
Local governments in Florida are the most prepared disaster preparedness agencies in the country, in part, because they have had a lot of practice. However, with every hurricane, the issue of housing (temporary and permanent) is a major problem that confronts all agencies. How does a government sufficiently prepare? What are the resources available to assist with this issue? What lessons were learned from the disaster in the panhandle last year? The Disaster Housing Recovery Director with the Florida Housing coalition will provide an informal overview of this issue and offer recommendations for local governments.

Presenter
Gladys Cook, Disaster Housing Recovery Director, Florida Housing Coalition

FlaWARN: An Overview of the Benefits for Local Government Members
August 1, 2019 from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m.
ICMA Practice Areas: 4, 6, 8, 9, 10

Program

Attendees will receive an informative presentation on the purpose and benefits of FlaWARN, and specifically, they will learn how local governments can/should be part of the FlaWARN program. When disasters hit a region, local governments are the primary service providers. And, pooling resources and coordinating outside assistance is a critical function for every local Emergency Operation Center. Scott Kelly and Gary Williams will articulate the benefits of having a signed MAA as part of any disaster preparedness program and, more recently, how FlaWARN provided assistance to governments hit by Michael and Irma. With the peak of the hurricane season soon upon us, the timing of this webinar could not be better.
