“Community-Based Disaster Coalitions: The "Be Ready Alliance Coordinating for Emergencies” (BRACE) Example"

ICMA Practice Areas: 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10

When disasters hit in Florida, local governments are always tasked with the major responsibilities to coordinate services. In Northwest Florida, a community-based disaster coalition, with over 500 public-private partners, works to accomplish what no one single organization could alone. The coalition, referred to as the Be Ready Alliance Coordination for Emergencies (BRACE) is responsible for three governmental jurisdictions as the Citizen Corps and Community Response Team (CERT) coordinator and is represented at the EOC during emergencies as the lead organization for coordinating volunteers and donations. BRACE has been recognized through the FEMA Individual and Community Awards Program more frequently than any other in the country, with three top awards, two of which were presented at the White House. During this FCCMA webinar, BRACE CEO Greg Strader will provide an overview of the BRACE program and explain how the model is replicable for adoption to address emergency management needs in any community.

  • Greg Strader, CEO, BRACE
